Job Description

NICU ASSISTANT NURSE MANAGER

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position works a convenient alternating schedule of 2, 12-hour shifts one week and 3, 12-hour shifts the following week, averaging 30 hours per week or 60 hours per pay period. Two night shift positions and one day shift position are currently available. A night shift differential of $14.10/hr is provided for night shifts, while day shift offers an $8.90/hr differential for 12-hour shifts.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the NICU Nurse Manager in overseeing day-to-day clinical operations including neonatal intensive care practice standards, staffing, scheduling, payroll, budgets, fiscal management, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Ensures delivery of highest quality neonatal intensive care in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and established NICU policies and procedures
  • Develops and implements action plans to improve neonatal critical care nursing staff development and clinical competencies
  • Supports supervision of the NICU (24 hours) of approximately 20-60+ neonatal nurses and support personnel
  • Monitors allocation and utilization of personnel based on neonatal patient acuity/needs to provide optimal critical care while identifying savings opportunities
  • Assists in overseeing daily NICU operations, including human resources management, neonatal safety programs, and risk management
  • Monitors neonatal service quality and utilization standards while assuming responsibility for unit-level patient care during assigned shifts
  • Ensures coordinated treatment plans, family-centered developmental care, and cost-effective neonatal intensive care service utilization
  • Collaborates with neonatologists, pediatric specialists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers to achieve optimal outcomes for critically ill newborns
  • Researches, identifies, and implements best practice models for neonatal critical care from other NICU facilities
  • Investigates and resolves family concerns regarding neonatal critical care experiences and supports family-infant bonding

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Alternating schedule: 2, 12-hour shifts one week and 3, 12-hour shifts the next week
  • Average of 30 hours weekly or 60 hours per pay period
  • Two night shift positions available with $14.10/hr differential
  • One day shift position available with $8.90/hr differential for 12-hour shifts
  • Position requires occasional weekend and holiday coverage in NICU setting

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of neonatal intensive care nursing experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as NICU charge nurse, neonatal critical care preceptor, quality improvement champion, or related leadership role

License/Certification:

  • Active Registered Nurse License (required at hire)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Basic Life Support certification

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Evidence of completed training as NICU preceptor or neonatal critical care charge nurse
  • Demonstrated knowledge of neonatal quality improvement, critical care delivery processes, NICU staffing, and budgeting
  • Knowledge of Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission neonatal standards, and other regulatory requirements for neonatal intensive care
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for coordinating multidisciplinary neonatal teams
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment with neonatal intensive care team members
  • Demonstrated ability to manage neonatal critical care emergencies and high-stress situations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN-Neonatal) or RNC-NIC certification strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing with neonatal specialty focus preferred
  • Master's degree in nursing administration, education, or related field highly desirable
  • Experience with neonatal ventilator management, TPN administration, and central line care
  • Experience with premature infant care, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and therapeutic hypothermia
  • Demonstrated leadership in neonatal critical care quality improvement initiatives and family-centered developmental care practices
