PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Pharmacy Manager works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Director. The Pharmacy Manager assists the Pharmacy Director with administrative, clinical, operational, management and training of pharmacy personnel, along with completing the essential functions of a pharmacist. Pharmacists assess, monitor, initiate and modify medication use according to patient condition and age specific criteria. Pharmacists ensure prompt and accurate medication preparation and dispensing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Pharmacy Manager is called upon to assist in the supervision of pharmacy personnel. The position will have the authority to assign tasks, schedule, train, and direct daily workflow. This position will observe performance and will work with the Pharmacy Director in giving feedback as appropriate and may arrange for further training when needed.
The Pharmacy Manager assists the Pharmacy Director in the day-to-day operation of the Pharmacy department and functions as a member of the Pharmacy team.
The Pharmacy Manager assists the Pharmacy Director with the day-to-day scheduling of work (responsible for developing/maintaining staff schedules), coordination of the daily work for department staff, orientation, and input for employee evaluations.
The Pharmacy Manager participates in interviews and gives feedback for the hiring of new staff.
Serves as a resource to department staff as members of the team as needed.
Assist the Pharmacy Director with the development and implementation of new workflows to improve efficiencies.
Assists the Pharmacy Director in maintaining policies, procedures, and protocols.
Stay up to date on changes within the department and assist in dissemination of information.
Complete monthly reports and provide documentation to the Pharmacy Director for review in a timely manner.
Leading and/or organizing meetings as assigned.
Leading projects or initiative for the team.
Serve has on-call back-up for the Director of Pharmacy during vacancy (i.e. illness, vacation).

ESSENTIAL PHARMACIST FUNCTIONS

Review and assess medication orders to identify, prevent and resolve potential and actual drug related problems. Recommend formulary alternatives when appropriate.
Compound and dispense medications for accurate delivery to patients.
Provide drug information and education to medical staff and patients.
Communicate with physicians and other clinicians as necessary to facilitate care.
Oversee technical personnel who assist in the preparation, maintenance and dispensing of medications and supplies.
Provide patient counseling efficiently and effectively when required.
Adhere to policies, procedures and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.
Maintain competence required for position.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Utilizes aseptic technique in medication preparation.
Demonstrate the ability to perform IV compounding correctly and safely.
Performs mathematical calculations to convert drug concentration to dosage desired correctly and efficiently.
Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment in the preparation of chemotherapy agents.
Demonstrates technical skills required for drug preparation and ability to assemble required equipment
Utilizes venting appropriately.
Reconstitutes powders according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Labels medications clearly.
Assist the pharmacy buyers with inventory optimization efforts as warranted.
Procure and distribute medications per order, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
Maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
Maintain adequate documentation as required by law and regulation.
Contribute to the effective operation of the department.
Participate in the quality improvement activities of the department.
Maintain competence required for current job title/position.
Perform other duties as assigned by the director.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

He/she aids in the supervision of pharmacy staff and is a colleague with other health care directors who oversee other areas in the association.
Coordinate daily activities of the pharmacist and/or pharmacy technicians to assist with job distribution and workflow optimization.
Coordinate annual ongoing competencies for pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians.
Create and maintain the pharmacist and/or pharmacy technician schedule.
Ensure routine quality assurance tasks performed by pharmacy personnel are completed accurately and on time.
Helps oversee the optimization of department automation.
Requirements:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Graduate from an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science degree, or Doctorate of Pharmacy degree.
Missouri Board of Pharmacy pharmacist licensure with Medication Therapy Services designation in good standing.
Must have attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills are sufficient for effective supervision of pharmacy staff and patient care.
Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
Must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, ability to prioritize and problem solve, ability to mathematically compute and convert drug concentrations and doses.
2-3 years of previous hospital experience required.
1-3 years of previous pharmacy management experience preferred.
Completion of an ASHP-Accredited PGY1 Residency preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
