Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

*DUTIES Continued: The physician participates in teaching and supervising Addiction Medicine Fellows, Psychiatry Residents, and Medical Students. The Addiction Specialty Physician will primarily provide outpatient substance use disorder care, offering both psychiatric and medical services in accordance with approved privileges and all applicable state and federal guidelines within the Mental Health Service. The Phoenix VA Addiction Psychiatry section is expanding, including further development of ambulatory services for veterans with substance use disorders. The physician will support veterans referred for Buprenorphine treatment and those discharged from inpatient psychiatry and residential care, who may benefit from specialty addiction services. The role includes supporting harm reduction services, coordinating consults, triaging addiction referrals, participating in team meetings and treatment planning, and collaborating with team members for comprehensive care. The physician may also provide care in ambulatory withdrawal management and facilitate appropriate higher-level care referrals.

Qualifications: To qualify, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to meet the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Completion of approved residency training leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those accredited by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
• Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies who meet other requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), with specific restrictions.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred Experience: Addiction Psychiatry, Dual Diagnosis SUD treatment, Buprenorphine/naloxone management.
• Physical requirements as per VA Handbook 5019/1.

Duties

• Perform psychiatric assessments and treatments, including co-occurring substance use disorders, within a multidisciplinary team.
• Provide outpatient psychiatric services via face-to-face and telepsychiatry, in accordance with privileges and guidelines.
• Serve as a liaison between SUD and mental health clinics, providing treatment for co-occurring disorders and supporting inpatient and residential care coverage as needed.
• Conduct evaluations, prescribe medications including Buprenorphine, monitor patient progress, and provide education and counseling.
• Perform psychiatric on-call duties, manage medications, and participate in health promotion activities.
• Teach and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees, potentially using telehealth modalities.
• Additional duties include participation in specialized programs like MHICM and providing comprehensive outpatient treatment for SUDs and mental health disorders.
